What Happens In Those Friday Faculty Meetings?
7:20am: Mr. Berk rolls into the Derryfield Parking lot.
7:25am: Mr. Powell and friends make their way to the Lyceum.
7:30am: Dr. Carter starts the mystery meeting.
7:40am: Tardy teachers discreetly sidle into the Lyceum.
Ever wondered just what goes on in the Lyceum early Friday mornings? No, the teachers don’t gossip about us, and no, they don’t plot to make all their biggest assignments due in the same week. The Friday morning meeting is much like a weekly homeroom for the teachers: various faculty members make announcements about events, sports, or professional development days. Mr. Powell says they like to learn from each other, so teachers often give presentations about new projects or ideas about improving the learning experience.
Dr. Carter has also gotten into the habit of highlighting specific faculty and staff for certain things they have done recently. This is a new development that Dr. Carter has instated, but the history behind these faculty meetings is interesting as well.
Mr. Powell informed me that the meetings used to be on Mondays, but they were moved to Fridays. Maybe because naturally everyone is in a better mood? And Mr. Berk is a day away from getting away from us because he “loves us”? Just a guess. Mr. Powell also explained that the meetings were nicknamed “Stand Up” because in the olden days, all the faculty and staff stood during these meetings.
So for all of us peeking in the windows in the Lyceum door, there’s really not much excitement going on in there, unless you’re into the idea of extended homeroom.
