Team Derryfield

The Derryfield School is a renowned college preparatory institution that takes pride in pushing students to their limits academically day-in and day-out. How, then, are we able to field such remarkable sports teams across the board every single year? Mr. Cousineau, our Senior Head Class Advisor, is not only the Boys’ Varsity Soccer Head Coach, but a supportive fan of all Derryfield sports teams. In his speech during All School Assembly on Monday, October 17th, 2016, Cousineau stressed the importance of being fans of one another. In a personal interview, Cousineau suggested the following: “Everybody should be proud of everybody. At Derryfield, we get spoiled with annual championship contention, and we should be celebrating every opportunity.” Cousineau, here, is bringing to light the annual success that our sports teams achieve, and warning the Derryfield community not to take any of that success for granted.

It is natural to be competitive with our peers in anything that we do in life. This fall, for example, Cousineau highlights that the Field Hockey and Girls’ Soccer programs will always naturally be competitive with one another. He compares this relationship between the two programs to “sibling rivalry.” Though this natural competitiveness will always exist in some form or another, it is critical for the success of our sports teams that we, as a Derryfield community, come together and offer each other our support. All of our athletes represent “Team Derryfield”, and so there is no reason not to rally around the successes of our peers.

Our sports teams at Derryfield are seemingly always in contention for championships; for a school of our small size, this is incredibly impressive. When asked how Derryfield is able to continuously achieve such great athletic success, Cousineau offered the following reason, among others: “We have great competitors.” He then goes on to offer the example of Lee Sipes ’17, who he described as “an athlete that came to Derryfield to play lacrosse.” Sipes, now committed to play college lacrosse at Merrimack College, has been a four-year starter on the Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team. Cousineau attributes Sipes’ success in his secondary sport to his “ athleticism and smart sports brain.” It is clear that Sipes embodies the Derryfield athlete with his passion for athletics and his will to win.

Derryfield sports fans will always have a lot to be excited about, no matter what season it is. It is our responsibility to carry our teams to victory with our support and be fans of one another. Cousineau offers a final question to the Derryfield community in regards to our athletics: “Are we really bored with winning?” This question from Cousineau is genuine. We seriously ought to come together as a community and rally around our incredible athletic programs together!

Come join your peers in supporting each and every one of our outstanding sports teams this year!
