Dancin’ to the Beat of the Bells

Staying active after school is a breeze with Derryfield’s two-sport requirement, but how are students staying active during the course of the day?

Without Salsa Club in town anymore, a new club has taken over the gym during Tuesday’s activities period: Dance Team! Hannah Richmond ’19 and Emma Tierno ’19 founded this team at the beginning of the year to offer a dance option for sports credit that the school lacks. Richmond explains, “We both participate in dance outside of school and were kind of disappointed by how little dance was represented and how insignificant it was in our arts program, so we decided to make a club!” Students are welcomed to participate on the Dance Team no matter what their experience level, and it is an easy way to get involved and active between classes.

Members of dance team describe it as a “vibrant” and “energetic” half of an hour with “lots of fun, laughter, and creativity.” The team as a whole is about ten students: eight female and two male. The collection of students is diverse, with theater lovers, lacrosse stars, and math scholars all coming together for a hip hop-y vibe with modern moves.. Hannah agrees that the environment is a free and open one, saying that “Dance Team is a fun and open group of people that get together and dance! You don't have to have any experience and it's exciting for me to see people who join Dance Team that haven't danced before because we can then cultivate their passion for dance and spread the love.”

An overarching goal of dance team is to perform at assemblies but currently, the team is working on a dance to be performed around Winter Carnival. You can look for the Dance Team in the gym on Tuesdays, dancing between classes and musical bells.
